  Wellness Center Nutrition...

Proper nutrition is essential for the healthy growth and development of all people. YMCA facilities, programs, and activities that
provide food and/or snacks should do so in a safe, clean and pleasent environment, and in a responsible manner. While most eating habits begin at home and families are primarily responsible for making healthy food choices, YMCAs can support this effort whenever food is served as part of a program or activity.
The United States Department of Agraculture and the Department of Health and Human Services has published the updated dietary guidelines for all Americans.

These guidelines provide advice for Americans ages 2 years and over about food choices that promote health and prevent disease. By following these guidelines, YMCAs can help members develop good health and reduce their risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, certain types of cancer, diabetes, stroke and osteoporosis. The following are ten dietary guidelines for Americans:

1. Aim for a healthy weight
2. Be physically active every day
3. Let the Pyramid guide your food choices
4. Choose a variety of grains daily, especially whole grains
5. Choose a variety of fruits and vegitables daily
6. Keep food safe to eat
7. Choose a diet that is low in saturated fats and cholestoral and moderate in total fat
8. Choose beverages and foods to moderate your intake of surgar
9. Choose and prepare foods with less salt
10. If you drink alcholic beverages, do so in moderation

The Medical Adisory Committee endorses these general guidelines, and urges YMCAs to use them in educating members and the community on nutrition and when planning food and/or snacks in YMCA programs.
